EBSCO’s paid America: History and Life database indexes 1,193 peer-reviewed journals and other magazines, conference proceedings, reviews, dissertations, and books on the history and culture of the United States and Canada. Journals represented include scholarly outlets which regularly feature research on Civil War era Kentucky such as the Register of the Kentucky Historical Society and Ohio Valley History. The database offers both full-text and abstracts of history publications. America: History and Life must be accessed with login credentials provided by an institution or organization which has purchased a subscription.
Launched by John Hopkins University in 1995, Project MUSE is a non-profit collaboration offering full-text access to journals and books from more than 400 publishers. This database specializes in humanities and social sciences publications, including a plethora of interdisciplinary works on U.S. history and, by extension, Kentucky and the Civil War era. Monographs like Harrison's Civil War in Kentucky, reference works like the Kentucky Encyclopedia, and full runs of prominent journals like the Register of the Kentucky Historical Society, Civil War History, and Journal of the Civil War Era including current issues are available on Project MUSE. Users can browse or search by multiple attributes; search within books and journals; and set alerts for new issues of journals. While the database includes a number of open access publications, most resources are accessed through institutional or individual login credentials. Unlike EBSCO databases, Project MUSE allows individual users to purchase subscriptions.
Maintained by the National Park Service, the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System (CWSS) database contains basic service record information for 6.3 million U.S. and Confederate military personnel, including nearly 160,000 Kentucky service members. Each entry contains a service member’s full name, rank, unit, company, and other variable information such as alternate name. Users may search by keyword, name, state, side, and battle unit function. While the CWSS does not yet feature records for all naval personnel, it contains records for 18,000 African American sailors, including 416 Black Kentuckians. The database also contains information on hundreds of battles, regimental histories, Civil War monuments, burial records, prisoners of war, and Medal of Honor recipients.
